About the stone: Larimar was formed when volcanic activity caused a unique mixture of minerals in a hydrothermal fluid to cool and crystalize into the gemstone. Due to its unusual origins in the Dominican Republic, larimar is only found in a very small region. After 30+ years of mining, the higher quality stones are now more than 500 ft. down. The larimar mines are considered artisan mining since they rely mostly on human, physical labor. A cooperative of local villages is responsible for digging up each piece of larimar and they also ensure that members of their local communities are the only one’s mining.
